The Healthy Children Concept has been developed within a European development project, supported by the European Public Health Programme (2010-2013). The overall philosophy of the concept is to create strategic partnerships between local health promoting authorities, civil society organisations and volunteers, and to train the volunteers to act as “health ambassadors” working with children and young people in deprived areas.

Children and young people in deprived areas are often believed to be difficult to reach with traditional health promoting activities. The Healthy Children Concept takes that specific challenge into consideration and seeks new ways to communicate with children, young people and their families in order to engage and empower them to take active decisions about their good health.

The main objective is to improve overall health among children, young people and their families suffering from lifestyle- related health challenges such as eating disorders, under and overweight or diabetes, and with unhealthy habits in relation to physical activities, smoking and use of alcohol and drugs.

The Healthy Children website can be used as a toolbox for local communities and civil society organizations that want to find inspiration on how to work more strategically with volunteers as a resource to reach children and young people in deprived areas with health promoting activities.
